Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021
Yang Bangsheng's Golden Eagle G Nanjing Business Hotel presents a breathtaking interior lounge space where the eye is immediately drawn to an extraordinary ceiling treatment composed of tessellated metallic elements exhibiting a water-rippled, hammered surface finish in warm rose-gold and champagne tones that cascade across the entire overhead plane, creating an effect reminiscent of light dancing upon disturbed water surfaces or perhaps thousands of overlapping leaves caught mid-shimmer. The compositional architecture establishes a dynamic interplay between the organic, almost chaotic energy of the ceiling installation and the grounded, deliberate arrangement of seating clusters below, with cylindrical columns wrapped in the same reflective metallic material serving as vertical anchors that connect these two spatial registers. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated harmony of warm metallics ranging from copper through rose gold to champagne, counterbalanced by cool dove grays in the upholstered seating, with strategic punctuation of deep crimson accent cushions providing chromatic intensity against the otherwise neutral foundation. Illumination appears to emanate from concealed sources that wash the textured ceiling, causing each hammered facet to catch and refract light differently, producing a scintillating atmospheric effect of perpetual movement. The spatial organization follows a curvilinear schema with circular area rugs in taupe featuring sinuous terra-cotta linear patterns defining intimate conversation groupings, while the highly polished black stone flooring in the foreground acts as a reflective surface that doubles the visual complexity by mirroring the spectacular ceiling above. The textural contrast between the rough, dimensional ceiling treatment and the smooth, lustrous floor creates a sophisticated material dialogue, while mid-century modern inspired armchairs with their clean lines and wooden legs provide human-scaled comfort within this otherwise dramatic environment.
