A commanding disc of matte charcoal polymer commands the visual field, its surface articulated through an intricate lattice of diagonal crosshatching that creates a mesmerizing diamond-grid pattern reminiscent of Japanese origami or precision-engineered aerospace components. CHEN,CHIA-WEI's The Board Skateboard presents itself in an unexpected configuration—rolled into a near-perfect circle that defies conventional expectations of rigid deck construction, displayed upright upon a glossy obsidian stand that mirrors fragments of the object above. The compositional architecture follows a centralized radial schema, with the circular form occupying approximately seventy percent of the frame against a gradient backdrop transitioning from warm pearl gray at the apex to deep slate at the horizon line. Each segment of the articulated surface features precision-milled grooves running at forty-five-degree angles, intersected by rows of metallic fasteners—small circular elements catching ambient light to create rhythmic punctuation across the undulating terrain. The chromatic palette maintains rigorous restraint, operating within a sophisticated monochromatic range from gunmetal to graphite, with subtle warm undertones emerging where soft diffused illumination grazes the raised ridges. Light enters from the upper left quadrant, producing gentle gradations across the segmented panels while the glossy base surface creates a mirror-world reflection that extends the visual narrative downward. The sawtooth silhouette along the disc's perimeter—each triangular protrusion representing an individual articulated segment—evokes organic forms such as seed pods or pinecones while simultaneously suggesting advanced technological precision. Spatial depth remains deliberately shallow, the object presented as sculptural specimen against an infinite neutral void, emphasizing material presence over environmental context. The textural interplay between the matte, almost velvety surface of the deck segments and the high-gloss reflective base establishes a dialogue between absorption and reflection that enriches visual interest.
The Board has a strong visual appeal of its transforming process. The structure makes it a completed circle which can be put in a backpack easily. Because of the circular appearance, it can be part of decorations at home or even place in the narrow space. It will give the users disparate visual experience and surprise. The skateboard is made from 57 interlocking pivot hinges, by folding the hinges one direction or the other, transforming the classic cruiser shape into a perfect circle.
