Woodland Kindergarten

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2021

Liu Jinrui's Wandering in the Woods Kindergarten unfolds as a luminous vertical atrium of extraordinary spatial generosity, where the eye is immediately drawn to a sinuous wooden staircase that spirals through the composition like a ribbon of warm honey-toned oak against the pervasive titanium white of walls, ceilings, and balustrades. The compositional architecture operates on a sophisticated interplay between curvilinear and rectilinear geometries, with the organic serpentine path of the central stairway counterbalanced by the orthogonal precision of the surrounding architectural framework, creating dynamic equilibrium between biomorphic fluidity and rationalist order. The chromatic palette demonstrates remarkable restraint, dominated by an almost monastic white that approaches the luminosity of gesso-primed canvas, punctuated by strategic interventions of natural materials: the pale blond of laminated timber in stair treads and balustrades, warm dusty rose and terracotta panels suggesting birch plywood or fabric-wrapped acoustic surfaces along the right elevation, and verdant artificial turf in organic kidney-shaped islands at ground level that read like abstracted woodland clearings. Zenithal illumination floods through an expansive skylight grid of translucent panels reinforced by cruciform structural beams, creating a cathedral-like quality of diffused daylight that minimizes harsh shadows while establishing a sense of vertical aspiration. The spatial construction employs multiple overlapping planes across three visible levels connected by glass balustrades that maintain visual transparency, allowing sight lines to penetrate horizontally and vertically through the entire volume. Small figures of children in motion introduce both scale reference and kinetic energy, their blurred forms suggesting the temporal dimension of lived experience within this carefully orchestrated environment. The edge treatment favors crisp architectural definition softened by the organic curvature of the staircase, while textural variation moves from the smooth coolness of painted surfaces to the tactile warmth of wood grain and the implied softness of green turf, establishing a hierarchy of material sensation that guides physical and visual exploration through this pedagogical landscape.

Wandering in the Woods is a kindergarten interior designed for children aged two to six. The original building had limited space and relied heavily on artificial light. For reasons of structural stability and cost, the design keeps the entire structure and inserts an atrium that runs vertically through three stories, so all classrooms receive natural light from both sides. Columns become trees and beams become bridges. Continuous stairs and slides spiral around the columns and connect the spaces. Tree houses offer quiet areas for reading and handwork.
