Euphoria Retreat Spa Lighting Design

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2021

Concentric bands of graduated blue-gray tonalities arc across the upper register of Anna Sbokou and Matina Magklara's Euphoria Retreat Spa Lighting Design, creating a compelling rotunda-like spatial envelope that draws the eye inexorably toward three hemispherical ceiling fixtures punctuating the zenith, each presenting a striking bisection of matte black exterior and warm gold interior that reads as celestial bodies suspended in twilight atmosphere. The compositional architecture achieves profound bilateral symmetry, with the central axis bisecting the frame to reveal three arched apertures at the middle and lower registers, their golden-ochre interiors emanating a honeyed luminosity that contrasts magnificently against the cool cerulean and slate-toned curved walls. The chromatic strategy orchestrates a masterful dialogue between thermal opposites: the warm amber and burnished gold of the niches and fixture interiors operating in split-complementary tension with the dominant cool palette of Payne's gray, French ultramarine undertones, and celadon passages that graduate through the concentric ceiling bands. Atmospheric perspective operates not through aerial recession but through chromatic temperature shift, as the eye travels from the warm terrestrial glow of the arched alcoves upward through progressively cooler registers toward the crown. The reflective pool occupying the foreground creates a liquid mirror that doubles the architectural composition, its still surface capturing inverted golden semicircles and multiplying the sense of depth while maintaining the meditative tranquility essential to spa environments. Light sources remain concealed within the architectural fabric, creating indirect ambient illumination that eliminates harsh shadows while the golden niche interiors function as primary luminous accents. The surface treatment throughout suggests polished concrete or tadelakt plaster, contributing to the contemplative ecclesiastical atmosphere evocative of Byzantine baptisteries or Roman thermae reinterpreted through contemporary minimalist sensibilities. Edge transitions between the graduated ceiling bands appear softened, suggesting careful attention to seamless integration, while the arched apertures present crisp geometric definition against the curving enclosure. The overall affect achieves profound serenity, the spatial composition suggesting both cosmic order through the planetary ceiling fixtures and earthly sanctuary through the embracing curved walls and luminous golden portals.

The Spa at the Euphoria Retreat, is located in Mystra. It is a four-story building, of 3.000 m2, that is carved into the base of a mountain. The lighting for each space was considered as a unique piece, contributing to the crescendo of the ultimate relaxation experience. As daylight would vary substantially from one space to another, custom luminaires were designed to imitate daylight conditions, thus harmonizing the transitions through spaces and enhancing the immersive architecture.
