Fineland QingCloud Library reading

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

Studio revo and fineland architecture's QingCloud Library Reading presents a commanding interior space dominated by a monumental curvilinear shelving structure that spirals upward from the polished concrete floor toward an elliptical oculus in the ceiling, creating a dynamic vertical axis that organizes the entire compositional field. The shelving system, constructed from warm-toned wood veneer in hues reminiscent of raw sienna and pale ochre, cascades in rhythmic horizontal bands punctuated by slender teal-green accent strips that trace the undulating contours like meridian lines on a celestial sphere. Each cuboid compartment within this curved bibliothèque emits soft, diffused illumination from backlighting panels, transforming the structure into a luminous sculptural presence that radiates an ethereal glow throughout the space. The chromatic palette operates within a sophisticated analogous harmony, with the dominant warm timber tones establishing terrestrial groundedness while the cool aquamarine accents introduce visual punctuation and temperature contrast. At the compositional center, a pristine white hemispherical form rests upon the floor, its smooth convex surface reflecting ambient light and serving as a gravitational anchor point beneath the ceiling void. This ceiling aperture, ringed with metallic gray louvers and recessed downlights, functions both as a light well and as the terminus of the spiraling shelving composition, creating a powerful vertical thrust that draws the eye upward through successive horizontal registers. The spatial construction employs curvilinear perspective, with the sweeping shelving walls establishing a sense of enveloping embrace while simultaneously suggesting infinite expansion beyond the frame edges. Natural daylight penetrates through floor-to-ceiling glazing at the left periphery, revealing verdant landscape elements that provide complementary green hues echoing the interior accent colors, thereby establishing a dialogue between interior architecture and exterior environment. The surface treatment throughout maintains exceptional refinement, with the polished flooring exhibiting subtle reflection, the wood surfaces presenting smooth matte warmth, and the metallic ceiling elements contributing contemporary industrial elegance. Edge behaviors alternate between the crisp delineation of individual shelf compartments and the flowing continuity of the overall curved form, creating visual rhythm through repetition with variation. This interior space demonstrates sophisticated spatial phenomenology resonant with contemporary organic modernism, suggesting affinities with the curvilinear vocabularies established by Zaha Hadid and the atmospheric sensibilities of Tadao Ando's light-filled volumes, while establishing its own distinctive poetic identity through the synthesis of biomorphic form, warm materiality, and transcendent illumination.

QingCloud Library is a creative bookstore and reading space located in Heshan, Guangdong, China. The interior covers 220 square meters, with a ceiling height of about 5 meters. Books, modern display cabinets and a casual coffee service are offered within the same room. A flowing cylindrical structure stands at the entrance to create a strong visual focus. Built-in shelves are arranged on both sides of the central element to guide movement and prevent crowding. Wood veneer, processed glass, color coating and stainless steel are used. Light effects shape the calm reading area.
