After Life Restaurant

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

Cascading crystalline elements in luminous teal and aquamarine dominate the upper register of devesh pratyay's After Life Restaurant, where hundreds of suspended glass or crystal formations create an ethereal canopy reminiscent of an underwater grotto or mineral cave formation, their faceted surfaces catching and refracting embedded light sources to produce a constellation of brilliant points that dance across the visual field with jewel-like intensity. The left wall presents a masterfully sculpted surface treatment in warm terracotta and umber tones, mimicking natural rock formations with deep fissures, undulating protrusions, and organic striations that suggest millennia of geological processes compressed into architectural ornament, the surface texture ranging from rough granular passages to smoother weathered areas that catch light differentially. A horizontal shelf or ledge emerges from this simulated rock face at approximately the lower third of the composition, supporting an arrangement of pillar candles in cream white, crimson red, and deep burgundy, their cylindrical forms creating a rhythmic repetition that anchors the otherwise dynamic composition. The chromatic dialogue between the cool viridian and cerulean suspended elements above and the warm sienna and burnt umber earthen walls below establishes a complementary color harmony of remarkable sophistication, with the temperature contrast enhancing perceived spatial depth. Illumination appears to emanate from multiple sources including embedded lights within the crystal cascade creating brilliant focal points and softer ambient lighting that models the textured wall surface with subtle chiaroscuro effects. The perspectival system follows a diagonal recession from lower left toward upper right, drawing the eye along a corridor that suggests continuation beyond the frame, while the crystalline installation functions as both ceiling treatment and sculptural intervention, blurring boundaries between architectural element and artistic installation. Wire mesh decorative objects at left and warm wooden framing at right provide material counterpoints to the dominant stone and glass vocabulary, enriching the textural complexity of this immersive environment.
