Snorre Stinessen's Narvik Gondola Station emerges from the alpine snowscape as a striking geometric intervention, its dark vertical cladding creating profound chromatic contrast against the pristine titanium white of the surrounding snow and the graduated atmospheric palette that transitions from warm cadmium yellow and Naples yellow at the horizon through pale cerulean to deepening cobalt blue in the upper reaches of the sky. The architectural form presents a compelling wedge-shaped profile that appears to slice into the mountainside with deliberate angular precision, the structure's faceted surfaces catching the low-angled golden hour illumination that rakes across the composition from the left, casting long violet-tinged shadows across the undulating snow formations in the foreground. The compositional architecture follows a dynamic diagonal schema, with the building's aggressive angular silhouette creating strong directional vectors that guide the eye from the warm luminous orb of the setting sun at left through the dark architectural mass toward the cable car mechanism visible at right, where a single gondola cabin descends against the backdrop of distant atmospheric blue mountains and what appears to be a fjord or body of water in the middle distance. The material palette establishes a compelling dialogue between the industrial precision of the corrugated metal cladding, rendered in deep charcoal and graphite tones with frost-kissed highlights along the vertical ribs, and the organic soft contours of wind-sculpted snow that embraces the structure's base. The lighting paradigm exemplifies the ethereal quality of northern golden hour conditions, with the sun positioned just above the horizon creating spectacular warm-to-cool temperature gradients across the entire visual field while simultaneously modeling the architectural surfaces with dramatic chiaroscuro effects that emphasize the building's bold volumetric presence. The Narvik ski resort is located directly above the city centre and is characterised by a very steep height to length ratio - from a 1000 meter above sea level all the way down to the sea. The new gondola brings the skiers up to the mountain top. The gondola top station is custom designed for the gondola functional requirements and the harsh climatic conditions, but also to form an integrated part of the overall Narvik Arctic Resort design strategy.
