Janus Watch

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

William Volcoff's Janus Watch commands immediate attention through its striking sculptural presence adorning the wrist of a figure captured in a moment of elegant gesture, the composition orchestrated through a sophisticated diagonal arrangement that draws the eye from the lower left toward the upper right where hands engaged with eyewear create dynamic visual tension. The timepiece itself serves as the gravitational center of this carefully considered frame, its distinctive cushion-shaped case rendered in polished steel that catches ambient light with specular precision, housing a dial of remarkable graphic clarity featuring a pristine white guillochéd surface punctuated by a bold circular aperture of deep obsidian black that creates striking figure-ground contrast. The chromatic architecture operates within a refined palette of achromatic sophistication, the cool steel grays and titanium whites of the watch harmonizing with the rich carbon black of supple leather comprising both the strap and the figure's jacket, this latter garment exhibiting masterful textural rendering with its characteristic pleating at the wrist and lustrous surface suggesting quality hide with years of graceful patination. Compositionally the image employs shallow depth of field to create hierarchical focus, the watch rendered in crystalline sharpness while the figure's face dissolves into soft bokeh, directing interpretive emphasis toward the horological object rather than portraiture. The lighting paradigm suggests overcast natural illumination supplemented by subtle fill, creating soft shadow transitions that model three-dimensional form without harsh contrast, the temperature reading neutral to slightly cool. Spatial construction flattens into near-planarity through the telephoto compression evident in the background's abstract blur of warm earth tones and cool grays, while the foreground arm creates a strong diagonal repoussoir anchoring viewer attention within the frame.

French inspired and brewed in Shanghai, the Janus is a real treat for all analog watch lovers. Thanks to its dual-dials and interchangeable strap, it is a good conversation starter and will make heads turn. User can flip and/or switch dials, and change straps to match daily outfit and activities. The case and lugs are made of steel and show first-rate finishing surface treatment and details. Straps are made of genuine leather with inner reinforcement to sustain daily wear.
