Portugal Vineyards Retail Space

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2020

Ricardo Porto Ferreira's Portugal Vineyards Retail Space presents an extraordinarily refined exercise in minimalist spatial architecture, where sweeping curvilinear walls of pristine titanium white corian or lacquered surfaces establish a fluid, continuous envelope that transforms conventional rectilinear retail typology into an organic, almost biomorphic environment suggesting the undulating terraces of vineyard landscapes abstracted into pure geometric form. The compositional armature employs a sophisticated dynamic symmetry, with sinuous curved partitions flowing from left foreground toward the central middle ground, their serpentine profiles creating rhythmic visual corridors that guide the eye through successive spatial zones while maintaining compositional unity through repetition of the curving motif. The chromatic strategy achieves remarkable restraint, deploying an essentially monochromatic palette of pure white across floors, walls, ceilings, and display furniture, punctuated solely by the deep burgundies, amber golds, forest greens, and obsidian blacks of wine bottles arranged in horizontal linear arrays along wall-mounted shelving that follows the curved architecture. Illumination derives from concealed cove lighting integrated into ceiling reveals that wash walls with diffused, shadowless luminosity approximating 5000K neutral daylight, supplemented by a singular spherical pendant fixture hovering in the middle ground that provides gentle ambient supplementation. The spatial construction employs atmospheric perspective through the recession of sequential curved planes, with a motion-blurred figure in dark attire traversing the threshold between zones, introducing human scale and temporal duration into the otherwise timeless stillness. Edge treatment throughout favors soft, rounded transitions where vertical surfaces meet horizontal planes, eliminating harsh corners in favor of continuous radiused profiles that enhance the organic fluidity. The overall atmospheric resonance suggests a contemporary secular temple devoted to oenological appreciation, combining the hushed reverence of gallery spaces with the accessibility of refined retail environments.

The Portugal Vineyards concept store is the first physical store for the online wine specialist company. Located adjacent to the company’s headquarters, facing the street and occupying 90m2, the store consists of an open-plan devoid of partitions. The interior is a blindingly white and minimal space with circular circulation - a white canvas for the Portuguese wine to shine and be displayed. The shelves are carved out of the walls in reference to the wine terraces on a 360 degrees immersive retail experience with no counter.
