Aum Campus

Warm honeyed limestone dominates Edwin Mintoff's AUM British Building Campus, where classical Mediterranean masonry meets contemporary architectural intervention in a composition of remarkable dialogic tension, the historic waterfront façade presenting a rhythmic procession of arched openings across two principal registers, the lower level featuring grand semicircular arcade windows with crisp white louvered shutters set within deeply recessed reveals that create dramatic chiaroscuro patterning, while the piano nobile above displays paired arched windows crowned with delicate balustrades and flanked by robust pilasters that establish vertical cadence against the pronounced horizontality of the string courses, the chromatic palette centering upon the warm ochre and raw sienna tones of the cut stone that absorbs and reflects the brilliant Mediterranean light with surfaces suggesting centuries of mineral crystallization and weathering patina, this historic base receives a bold contemporary crown in the form of a steel and glass pavilion structure that floats above the parapet line with apparent weightlessness, its horizontal roof plane extending in dramatic cantilever supported by slender steel columns while floor-to-ceiling glazing creates transparency that contrasts philosophically with the solid opacity below, the entire composition doubles itself through perfect specular reflection in the still harbor waters occupying the lower half of the frame, creating axial symmetry about the waterline that transforms the architectural statement into meditative mandala, the reflected image rendered in slightly cooler tonalities with gentle rippling distortions that introduce organic temporal movement against the permanence of built form, small olive trees visible along the rooftop terrace introduce organic counterpoint to geometric precision while white flags or banners provide vertical accent notes punctuating the horizontal emphasis, the cerulean sky graduating from deep cobalt at zenith toward paler atmospheric tones near the horizon establishes the temporal context of midday illumination with light falling from the upper left creating subtle shadowing within window reveals and beneath projecting elements.

Showcasing this heritage edifice as a protagonist of design remained the main principle behind this project. The 19th century building was severely damaged during WWII and later fell into disuse. Through sensitive design interventions, the building was brought back to life with a renewed purpose. As well as restoring the historic fabric in a meticulous fashion, the overall building was rehabilitated into a university campus in order to usher the site into the current age. Its industrial character is directly reflected in the exposed services and the original structural elements.
